An email, initially dated, 07 September 2024  to the BPS, currently without a response, copied 02/10/2024.  It follows the BPS disclosure of the 2018 list of the island’s 42 licence holders for a total of 100 firearms*.  The list detailed the licence holder’s names, dates of birth and addressees.  An application for 2 handgun licences was denied.

To the BPS:

Regarding firearm licences in Bermuda

1. Are there any amendments to the below list [retained]of licenced firearms holders?

I understand most of the licence holders are members of registered rifle clubs are permitted to have firearms but are not permitted to possess ammunition. The only persons who are permitted to have ammunition for these firearms are the officers of the clubs. It is possible these remain holders of rifles or shotguns i.e. unlikely to have been used in the multiple island shootings. All handguns are prohibited.

2. However, have any of the below reported theft of weapons or ammunition since 2018?

3. To whom is the list of holders/renewals distributed and

4. is it considered dissemination could give rise to concerns of crimes against the holders, burglary at premises, for example?

Please extend this request to the other persons who are permitted to possess guns and ammunition, the likes of the airport pest control officers (who have shotguns and air rifles) and the officers of the yacht clubs and the Bermuda Sloop Foundation (who have starting cannons).

5. When were the premises of each licensee last inspected, the ‘proper firearm safe’, bolted to the wall, examined?

6. When were the last background checks of each licence holder undertaken?

Specifically, about [redacted], I understand that he has previously applied to possess two handguns.

7. Had [redacted] purchased the guns?
8. What description of the guns was provided?
9. For what purpose were the guns to be acquired/possessed?
10. Have further applications been made for handguns and if so, what response was provided?

With those, understood to have passed away

11. What has become of their firearms?

Yours

*to include 2 starting cannons and 3 Hilti
