Bermuda Police Officers: Overpaid?
Starting pay is almost 20% above Bermuda’s median income. Recruitment still struggles, officer numbers remain below target, and serious crimes continue to go unsolved. So what is the public receiving for the premium?
A Cayman Islands report says a newly trained Bermuda police constable earns $79,516.
But the Bermuda Police Service currently advertises a starting salary of $90,706 – almost $15,000 above Bermuda’s reported median annual income.
Bermuda therefore appears to offer unusually generous starting pay, yet the Police Service says it still cannot recruit enough officers.
At the same time, the island continues to face persistent gun and knife crime, alongside a troubling number of unsolved murders.
So what is going wrong?
Is the problem pay, recruitment, deployment, police structure—or performance?
