13/12/204 – a Bermuda Police Service (BPS) superintendent has been fired for inappropriate conduct. The identity of the officer has yet to be disclosed but the lack of people holding such a rank is few and it will likely not be long before this detail is revealed.
The ‘poor conduct’ description covers a multitude. Whilst at first blush it may be considered that there have been performance failures it is reported the Officer was found guilty of behaviour “incompatible with the high standards of integrity required for continued service within the BPS”.
It is possibly reassuring to learn there are standards to be achieved by BPS officers but, on the face of it, the punishment appears harsh.
It appears the BPS website has undergone a relatively recent change to the senior Officer listings – for example, after months (more than a year) of his departure, Sean Field’s details are no longer present. As of 15/12/2024 two Superintendents are listed:
- Superintendent James Howard MM/HRM BSc (Hons) FCMI Dip. Crim.
- Superintendent Nicholas Pedro OTM BA
An Instagram post providing more detail and naming the officer can be read here. An article titled ‘Police Superintendent Nicholas Pedro Fired from the BPS’ has also been posted by the same source, TNN and can be read here.
16/12/2024, Nicholas Pedro confirms he is the subject of the dismissal and provides an explanation of events – read more here.
21/12/2024, someone has put their head above the parapet and raised questions … read more here. The Royal Gazette is not permitting comment … a lack of spine or is an appeal likely? The latter appears possible, the (former) officer having written ‘“Though I am limited in the extent of any comments I may wish to make at this time, I wish to put the matter into its true context’. The account can also be found on the Bermuda Ex-Police Association web site.
