19/12/2025 — Senior Police Officer Arrested on Suspicion of Impaired Driving

On 19 December 2025, a senior officer of the Bermuda Police Service was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving following a collision in Warwick involving a motor car and a motorcycle, in which the motorcycle rider sustained a serious injury. According to reporting, the officer is Superintendent Jerome Laws, who serves as head of the Community Policing Division.

A month on, Mr Laws remains on restricted duties while the investigation continues.

The Bermuda Police Service has apparently stated that it “holds itself to the same level of accountability as we do any member of the public. Integrity matters. Trust matters.”

From a professional accountability perspective, it is worth noting that the use of “we hold ourselves…” is a collective aspiration of the organisation rather than a description of individual conduct. It reflects a stated organisational value, though how that translates into individual accountability in practice remains a point of public scrutiny. Read more here, here & here.

  • Caveat: For the avoidance of doubt, Mr Laws has not been convicted of any offence; an arrest is an allegation only, and he remains legally presumed innocent unless proven guilty in due course.

Drink-driving in Bermuda is recognised as:

  • A criminal offence with clear legal limits and penalties.
  • Growing in frequency, with a concerning rise in impaired driving arrests and collisions involving alcohol.
  • A cultural challenge, where enforcement must be paired with education, community change, and structural support (e.g., transport alternatives).
  • Taken seriously by authorities and safety advocates, with ongoing efforts to raise awareness and reduce harm.
