Unsolved Murders

10/12/2022 – Specialist investigators ‘overwhelmed’ say BPS as 31 murders remain unsolved (source – Royal Gazette).  Training of Bermuda’s officers was unable to keep up with demand for the expertise and therefore specialist investigators will be recruited to the Bermuda Police Service from overseas.

  • 2022 saw 9 murders
  • 92 murders have been committed in Bermuda since 2006.
  • 171 attempted murders between January 2009 and June 2022

2011 ‘ Bermuda’s per capita murder rate has skyrocketed to almost double the global average in 2011.  Bermuda’s murder rate is ten times higher than the UK’s and more than double that of the US.(source – Royal Gazette)

Shaundae Jones, 20, shot at point-blank range in Dockyard as he left the Club Malabar nightclub with friends at about 3am. Jones had given evidence 3 months earlier about the 2001 stabbing death of Tekle Mallory at Ice Queen, in Paget

Charges were later dropped against a man, extradited from Jamaica in connection with the case, after a key witness failed to testify.

Kyari Flood, 23, in the area of Friswell’s Road and Border Lane South, Pembroke his body was discovered at about 1pm on February 14 in a secluded spot, a derelict cottage in an overgrown yard. He had been shot.

Mr Flood had been the victim of gunfire before, when he was wounded in the March 2020 attack on Court Street that claimed the life of Clarke Fox

Keni Outerbridge, 20, at Tribe Road No 5, Paget. Known to friends as Loppi, he was at a party when he was shot on the property at about 10.15pm.


05/05/2022

Keyoshe Robinson 22,  near the St Regis Golf Course, St George’s.  Police discovered his body by the shoreline near the 10th hole – he had been fatally shot.

05/2023 – update: one year since Keyoshe Robinson’s body was found – police are no closer to capturing his killer (source). A 2025 appeal for information – stating the obvious, Detective Inspector Dean Martin said: “There is someone out there who knows who is responsible for Mr Robinson’s death.”

Che Jennings, 24, at Warwick Workmen’s Club, Warwick. He was fatally shot in the club’s parking lot at about 8.30pm


06/04/2022

Laje Franklin, 18, at Southside Road near Pepper Hall Road, St George’s.  His body body was found shortly after 6.30am. He had been shot several times,


06/04/2021

Jordan Outerbridge, 37 at Tribe Road No 2 and the Railway Trail in Warwick.  Heading home from a residence at about 10.30pm, the first out the door, he was shot several times in the chest.

Garrina Cann, 31, at Sunset Lane, Pembroke, was fatally shot at her home at about 12.20am.  A gunman approached on foot and opened fire in front of family and friends

Her brother, Garry Cann, had been killed in a shooting in December 2009

Clarke Fox, 18, at Court Street, Hamilton. He was shot in broad daylight at about 2.45pm

Paul Johnson, 33 at Rambling Lane, Pembroke, he was shot dead just before 3am when he arrived home


27/08/2018

Danshun Swann, 25, at Southampton Rangers Sports Club. He was fatally stabbed shortly after midnight when a fight erupted between more than 20 men outside the club.

Two men were arrested in connection with his death, but were released on police bail.


27/07/2018

Taylor Grier, 30 at Court Street, Hamilton at about 10pm. Two men on a motorcycle, dressed in dark clothing and full-face visor helmets arrived.  The gunman dismounted and opened fire, hitting two men as the crowd scattered.

Jahkoby Smith, 21 at the West End Sailboat Club, Sandys. He was stabbed at about 7.15pm  when a mêlée broke out at the wake for Jahcari Francis (shot dead 10 days earlier – see below)


19 July 2017

Jahcari Antoni Francis 2o, He was fatally shot inside an Upland Street, Devonshire home. 07/2024, the matter remains unsolved.

He as a close friend of Isaiah Furbert (see 18/10/2016 – below), was fatally shot in the same home where his friend had died, in what police described as an identical scenario

Jahni Outerbridge, 31 at the Mid Atlantic Boat Club, Devonshire parking lot when a gunman, believed to have arrived and left on foot, fired upon him at about 11.20pm.


08/12/2016

Deshaun Berkley, 30 at the Western Stars Sports Club, Pembroke – when attending a party at the club he was fatally shot at about 1.20am.

The party was being held in memory of Garry “Fingas” Cann, who lost his life in a December 2009 shooting.

Five men were arrested and bailed in connection with Mr Berkley’s shooting — but to date no one has been charged.

Isaiah Furbert, 19 at Upland Street, Devonshire, was fatally shot at 10pm at his mother’s home

Note – the attack was at the same residence where, nine months later, 20-year-old Jahcari Francis would be shot dead.

Jason Mello, 25 at Bandroom Lane, Pembroke was was struck by several gunshots at 7.40pm.

Fiqre Crockwell, 30 at Woodlands Road, Pembroke. A gunman approached and shot him.

Patrick Dill, 26, at Crossland Lane, Pembroke he was shot dead outside his home at 10.45pm

Two men were arrested but bailed. No charges were laid.


21/07/2015

Job Tucker, 22, at Woodlawn Road, Sandys, he was fatally stabbed in the abdomen during a confrontation with a group of males.


23/04/2014

Erin Richardson, 29, at Riviera Crescent, Southampton, he was was sitting on a wall outside the home when he was shot multiple times, and fatally wounded.

Apparently had a conviction for robbery.


02/09/2013

Jonathan Dill, 30, at The Glebe Road, Pembroke, was was shot in the back of the head by a lone gunman at about 10.20pm.

Mr Dill was reported to have links to the 42 gang and had previously served jail time for his involvement in a shooting

Michael Phillips, 42, at the Mid Atlantic Boat Club, Devonshire.  A little after 9.35pm, he was preparing to leave on his motorcycle, when a gunman opened fire


09/07/2012

Rudy Smith, 41, has not been since the above date. The motorcycle he was last seen riding was discovered in the water off North Shore near Grace Church, Pembroke.

Police announced they were in the “unusual position” of treating it as a murder investigation.


23/06/2012

Joshua Robinson, 31 at Jason’s Barber Shop, North Shore Road, Pembroke.  Two men on a motorbike pulled up at about 5.15pm.  A gunman ran inside and opening fire, leaving Mr Robinson mortally wounded. He was said to have been attacked while sitting in a barber’s chair.

Mr Robinson was cousin to Kenwandee Robinson, shot dead in May 2009.


2012

Stefan Burgess, 24 years old.  Julian Washington jailed for life for murder has been released from prison after the Director of Public Prosecutions accepted there was a “miscarriage of justice” in his case.

Jason Smith, 22, at Overview Hill, Pembroke.  He was walking alone at 3.50am when a masked gunman walked up from the direction of Mount Hill behind him, and shot him twice

Jahmiko LeShore, 26 at Boundary Crescent, Devonshire.  Living nearby he had come to the front door when the lone gunman fired at him three times.

Frederick Maybury, 34, was shot several times outside the popular Sandys bar Woody’s on Malabar Road at 12.35am.


19/03/2010

James “Junior” Lawes, 26 on Dundonald Street, Hamilton, shot outside his apartment building near Place’s Place bar.

The weapon used was forensically linked to other murders, including the killing of Troy “Yankee” Rawlins on August 9, 2010.

Kimwandae Walker, 35 was shot at Victor Scott Primary School, Pembroke in front of children flying kites.


22/05/2009

Kenwandee “Wheels” Robinson, 27 at St Monica’s Road, Pembroke, two men on a motorcycle drove past and opened fire. Mr Robinson was fatally hit in the torso. The weapon used had been linked to other murders.

Believed to be linked to rivalry between the criminal gangs known as Parkside and 42.


06/04/ 2009

St Clair McDonald Augustus, 55 years old, known as ‘Gus’.  A homeless man, his burnt body was discovered after a fire in a derelict cottage often used by the homeless for drug abuse.

The death was quickly deemed suspicious, and according to police, Mr Augustus had been fatally stabbed.

Tekle Mallory: killed in a brawl outside Paget Ice Queen, with more than 100 onlookers late at night.  Read more here.


1996

Rebecca Middleton – torture and murder of a young Canadian tourist.  A monumental blunder by the prosecution enabled her killer(s) to evade conviction for the heinous crimes.


09/10/1994

Brian Simmons, 29, discovered with his throat slashed inside the main gates of the Pembroke Dump.  No suspects.


19/05/1994 – one guilty of manslaughter

Brian Sherlock – a Mid Ocean Club caddy  discovered lying in a pool of blood in a Hamilton parking lot following a’frenzied stabbing attack.  He died soon after in the hospital. Despite two confessions in October, 1994, no charge was laid until 1999.  One entered a plea to manslaughter and received 10 years.  No charges were brought against two other suspects.


21/12/1993

Irvin Dunlop, 48, part-time Mid Ocean Club golf caddy, found stabbed to death in an alley.  Policed have no suspects.


April 5, 1992

Chaona Woolridge, disappeared from her St. David’s home leaving behind her shoes, one on rocks near the water’s edge, four years old, Down’s syndrome child.  A missing person or worse?


1990

Mark Leonard Alexander Martin, 17, killed  while floating off Admiralty House during the first day of Cup Match.  The family hired a forensic scientist who concluded that Mark had met his death as a result of massive trauma consistent a boat propeller.  Allegedly the officer in charge of the case verbally assaulted Mark’s father when he attempted to inquire about the status of the investigation and potential witnesses were apparently dismissed by police.


13/11/1989

Jacqueline Meredith, 32. died of massive head injuries from three blows to the head as she slept in her Smith’s Parish home.  Her husband, Michael Meredith, a folk singer at the Hog Penny bar, Hamilton, was tried for her murder and found not guilty.  He moved to Florida, re-married.


25/01/1988

Stephen Daniels, 29, found stabbed to death in a Glebe Road, Pembroke apartment.  Gary Cordell Simmons was tried in June 1989 for his murder, believed to have been drug related.  He was acquitted.


04/05/1985

Aaron Easton, a Soccer Player, 19, found dead of head injuries and stab wounds.  The next day a lynch mob at Spanish Point tried to force a confession from a man seen running from the scene.  He was released after police found he was running from a different crime.  Apparently, an inquest was delayed (or not held) because of a police oversight.


02/05/1975

Webster (Stringy) Simons, 45, asst. manager of the Palm Cafe on South Shore, stabbed in the throat.  No arrest made.


03/03/1975

Margery Wade, 34, a Berkeley Institute school teacher was found beaten to death and then raped.  Police interviewed more than 4,000 people.  No charges filed.

22/10/1967

Cynthia DeSilva, 17, was shot in the back from a moving car on Dundonald Street.  Owner of the Coffee Shop on queen Street with whom DeSilva once had a relationship William, John Casablanca Forbes, 40, was charged.  Supreme Court juries deadlocked in two separate trials.  He reportedly died in the U.S. after plunging down an elevator shaft.


19/09/1964

Wendy Caines, 2 years old, died of head injuries at KEMH.  Police had a strong suspect; no one was charged.


24/03/1960

Kevin Outerbridge, little boy who disappeared  from his grandparent’s home in Bailey’s Bay.  As the days stretched into weeks, the searchers gradually disbanded and investigators shrugged their shoulders, baffled.  Daily newspaper articles dried up and the story subsided.  July, 1996, RG magazine.  A wealthy neighbour at the time offered to set up a reward for his safe return, but his mother claimed that police officials of the day refused claiming it would frighten off tourists. A missing person or worse?


06/05/1959

Dorothy Pearce, 59, raped and savagely beaten to death in her bedroom just a few houses away on Cobb’s Hill.  Police had a suspect for both, but lack of evidence meant no charges were ever laid.


07/03/1959

Gertrude Robinson, 72,  ‘Murder Mile Inquiries’ – Scotland Yard investigated sex murders of two elderly women beaten to death within two months of each other.  They lived a few houses away from each other.  Robinson was raped and beaten to death near a banana patch outside her Warwick Home.  She died in a hospital of head injuries.  No one was ever charged.

 

 

 

 

A 37 year old woman, Katherine Gartlan, an art teacher at Berkeley died in what police called a suicide. �Basically she just boiled to death,� said one officer.  Another admitted that �circumstances were unusual for a suicide.�
